MI Helicopters

MI Helicopters was established in 1993 and has their Head Office based in Roma, Queensland. We operate single and twin engine turbine helicopters providing a range of viable alternatives to ground based travel. In February 2020, MI Helicopters was acquired by Omni Executive and integrated into the Omni group of companies.

Whether it be a simple staff transfer to a remote location which would normally require off-road travel, or a low level survey flight over unchartered terrain, MI Helicopters can provide the speed and flexibility you need to get the job done safely and efficiently.

With the helicopter’s ability to ferry your staff and clients direct to any location, the unproductive time spent driving to the location is minimised. With the driving time reduced, your staff are able to accomplish set tasks within a quicker timeframe allowing increased productivity and reduced exposure to the well-known risks associated with the off-road driving in remote areas.

A number of companies and government departments have MI Helicopters as their preferred helicopter operator and look to us for advice when helicopter usage is required. The majority of our operations cover the Surat Basin, the Bowen Basin and the Galilee Basin in Queensland, however we also extend into the Northern Territory, South Australia, New South Wales and further afield when the role requires it.

We are also able to service Queensland’s Sunshine Coast region with aircraft based at the Caloundra Airport, these are available for general charter and airwork.

Our capabilities include…

  • Remote exploration support
  • Oil & gas field logistics
  • Rig camp demobilisation
  • External load operations
  • Aerial photography & filming
  • Pipeline patrols
  • Powerline patrols
  • Fire hazard reduction
  • ‘Hot Shotting’ of urgent spare parts
  • Feral animal control

Pilots & Ground Crew

Our team of experienced pilots have a combined total of over 33,000 hours flying experience. Their experience covers a wide range of aviation services from emergency services to corporate aviation.

Our team of pilots are selected for their varied aviation backgrounds and extensive experience, the ability to work autonomously in remote areas is also a prerequisite. Pilots undertake six monthly internal check and training flights and also complete external advanced flight training. All MI pilots receive Crew Resource Management training and, as part of our front line team, form an integral part of our Quality & Safety Management System.

We are an industry leader in Safety Management. We have a dedicated, Lead Auditor trained, Quality & Safety Manager on staff to oversee our SMS and monitor our Quality Management System. MI Helicopters conducts a number of internal audits per year along with several external audits on third party service providers. Our Safety Manager can be contacted on 1800 600 345 or by using our contact page.

Our trained ground support crews are an equally important part of our team as they provide the support needed to keep our aircraft operating safely and efficiently.

A Culture of Safety

A culture of safety is of paramount importance to the way MI Helicopters does business. We demand it of each other, as our clients demand it of us. MI Helicopters has an Integrated Safety Management System (SMS) that incorporates:

· A clearly stated Safety Management policy
· Management commitment
· Safety/Environmental Incident/Issue reporting system
· Systems of Hazard Identification and Risk Management
· Timely investigation of safety issues/hazards

· Induction and training systems
· An internal audit/review inspection program
· CASA compliant Drug & Alcohol Management Policy
· Environmental and Noise management

Regular internal and external safety audits form an integral part of our Quality and Safety management systems. Audits are conducted by both Australian and international auditing agencies throughout the year alongside MI Helicopters own internal audits.

Live GPS Flight Following

Prior to all flight departures, our pilots log departure time, destination, route and approximate arrival time with MI Helicopters main base or its associated support vehicle. Aircraft are actively monitored by ground staff with a maximum one hour interval between being positively identified using the Spidertracks tracking system. Spidertracks pinpoints the aircraft’s GPS position every five minutes, if the aircraft is engaged in low level operations the position update frequency is increased to once a minute.

Remote Area Specialists

MI Helicopters are the remote area helicopter specialists. With our own fleet of refuelling vehicles, aircraft engineers and trained ground staff, we can conduct helicopter operations practically anywhere!

Our refuelling staff hold applicable Dangerous Goods licences and are trained in all procedures associated with the transportation and use of Dangerous Goods.

Vehicles operating in areas that have noxious weed problems comply with the local area wash down procedures.
